SMART Bible Reading

There are few things more important in the Christian life than reading the Bible.  It is bible-SunlightGod’s primary way of speaking to us.  The Bible is one of a kind.  It has authority, it is inspired, it is alive with the very breath of God.  And it is crucial that we know it so that we can be effective witnesses of God’s activity on the earth.  The stakes are very high as we get closer to the end of this age.  Imagine the tragedy of being saved, even filled with the Holy Spirit with gifts and graces, but you cannot walk people through the truth of God’s plan and purpose because you have not studied God’s Word. Jersey Bound!

images21 years ago, we packed up a moving van and left pastoral ministry in South Jersey to begin an adventure in faith.  The very core of our calling was anchored in an encounter that I had with Jesus when I was 18.  Kneeling in a prayer chapel on the campus of Asbury University, I heard an inward, audible voice from The Holy Spirit.  I had asked in prayer for the Lord to tell me what He wanted me to do with my life.  This was His response:

Have Mercy

mercyThey just didn’t get it.

These men walked with Jesus and just didn’t see.  Mark 9 & 10 give us example after example of Christ’s followers blinded by their own ambition.

#1 – Mark 9:33-37

33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them,37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Continue reading
