Top 10 Things I Hope Missionaries Know

missionaryI’m beginning to understand just a little of what if felt like to be Paul. . .

“Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches…” 2 Cor. 11:28

Tania and I lead a missions network with 45 young leaders around the globe (www.malachinetwork.org).  We sing and pray over them regularly.  It’s not uncommon to lay awake in the night thinking about these precious leaders, many with beautiful children, living in very hard places.  They are strong witnesses of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Here are 10 things I hope they know. . . Continue reading

The Dance – Part 7 – The Father Choreographs

imagesThe Father Choreographs

“Our highest activity must be response, not initiative.” -C.S. Lewis

In the previous post, The Dance – Part 4, I wrote that one of the crucial elements in joyful dancing was to be rid of self-consciousness. I proposed that the opposite of self-consciousness was innocence. In this post, I want to go even further. The ultimate answer for self-consciousness is self-surrender. The biggest threat to my dance with Jesus is not the friction of discipline, critics or the great enemy of the dance. . .it is me. Continue reading

The Culture is Twisted, the King is Dead, but God is on a Throne!

isaiahI’ve been lost in the wonder of Isaiah 5 & 6 for the last month. You are probably familiar with the beautiful scene of encounter that Isaiah has with God in chapter 6. . .”I saw the Lord. . .and the train of His robe filled the temple.”

I’m seeing that the context of that great encounter is really important.  Isaiah and the people of Israel were in a dark place.  In fact, chapter 5 is filled with six “Woes” (think the very opposite of the “Blesseds” in the Beatitudes).  The Lord, through the prophet Isaiah, declares 6 stinging indictments against the people of Israel.  God pronouces judgement against their greed, indulgence, presumption, perversion, pride and injustice.  The vineyard which was Israel, was only producing bad fruit.

And then, as if things weren’t bad enough, King Uzziah died.  He was a good king that had reigned 52 years, and he was a friend of Isaiah.

Culture was twisted and the King was dead. . .But God is alive and He is seated on a throne!

One of the wonderful things about our Father’s world is that, no matter how black the horizon or how frightening the evil forces of social disintegration that appear to be destroying all around us that is good, if one looks closely enough, one always can find signals of hope somewhere. A Good Friday and a Black Saturday are never the last word in God’s story for us.

We must remember that even on that day when the Sun hid its face in shame before what appeared to be the ultimate victory of all evil, that day had within it the best of all promises—though not everyone could see it. History remembers that Friday as Good. The reason: Our Father, who is the first and last Word in every event, will not leave himself without a witness, and that witness is one of hope. There is always Good News to be found somewhere in his world if we will just look. We may need to search a bit because the divine hand often is found at work in the most unexpected places. – Dr. Dennis Kinlaw

I’m not sure I can remember a more dark time in the world.  We are threatened by violence at home, evil worldwide, disease and debt.  Here’s the good news. . .this is a prime setting for encounter!

According to 2 Chronicles 16:9, God searches the earth to show himself strong to those who are loyal to Him!  Posture your heart and focus your eyes. . .It’s in God’s DNA to reveal Himself.  I am praying that today you will find the divine hand working in the most unexpected places.

Cynicism or Joy?

MNlogoDear Friends of The Malachi Network,

Before I get into the amazing things happening in our network, I want to share something from Henri Nouwen that I read in my devotions this morning:

“For me it is amazing to experience daily the radical difference between cynicism and joy. Cynics seek darkness wherever they go. They point always to approaching dangers, impure motives, and hidden schemes. They call trust naïve, care romantic, and forgiveness sentimental. They sneer at enthusiasm, ridicule spiritual fervor, and despise charismatic behavior. They consider themselves realists who see reality for what it truly is and who are not deceived by ‘escapist’ emotions. But in belittling God’s joy, their darkness only calls forth more darkness.

People who have come to know the joy of God do not deny the darkness, but they choose not to live in it. They claim that the light that shines in the darkness can be trusted more than the darkness itself and that a little bit of light can dispel a lot of darkness. They point each other to flashes of light here and there, and remind each other that they reveal the hidden but real presence of God. They discover that there are people who heal each other’s wounds, forgive each other’s offenses, share their possessions, foster the spirit of community, celebrate the gifts they have received, and live in constant anticipation of the full manifestations of God’s glory.” Continue reading

ABC Continues This Fall!

unnamedWhat a GREAT first summer it has been for Avalon Beach Church!  For 12 weeks we have worshipped the King of Kings in the best sanctuary imaginable!  We averaged about 40 to 45 people a week and got to meet some amazing folks from all over the country.  We sang from our hearts, prayed with fire from heaven and loved each other well.  We got to lead people into a deep relationship with Christ and believe with Christians for healing and wholeness.  We watched Jesus answer the prayer that He taught us to pray:  His Kingdom came on earth just as it is in heaven!

We want to continue with those who live in this area into the Fall.  We would love for you to join us in our Simple Church.  Because we will meet in two different locations this Fall, please email me at richstevenson63@gmail.com for meeting information.  We would love to see you!

Here are two pictures of a baptism at our last service…
